‘Going green’ may seem like it’s only done for the benefit of the environment, and that it could only help sustain the generations after ours if we ensure that the resources we have at this point in time are not depleted by the time the next few generations grow up, long after we are gone. That is, indeed, a major goal for most of the people who choose to lead an eco friendly lifestyle, but what people do not realize is that it could also benefit you financially, physically and mentally as well. Avoiding toxins is really important to your physical and mental well-being and it is surprising when we realize the number of things that surround us on a daily basis that release an unhealthy amount of toxins, including simple and small things like using regular lights instead of LED lights. Start your practice towards sustainable living by building a plastic free bathroom.
Making minor adjustments to your life while making sure they benefit the environment and you can help you feel better, too. There are a few quick things you can try doing when you’re going green to be more eco friendly.
Remember the 4 R’s of staying Eco Friendly
Have you only heard of three R’s in the saying “reuse, reduce, recycle”? Allow us to introduce you to the fourth R that should be part of this; “refuse” which means you should start saying “no” to things that don’t cooperate with your lifestyle. If your local grocery store doesn’t have paper bags that can be recycled, try using a cloth bag for your groceries to avoid using non-recyclable plastic bags instead.
Organic Food is Better

Switch your diet to one where you only consume organic foods. This means any foods that have been treated chemically or altered like GMO foods are off limits. They’re bad for the environment and even worse for your body and health. Getting foods that are organic will help sustain the environment, too! Check out your local farmers’ market to find healthier, organic substitutes for your regular intake of poultry, eggs, vegetables, and fruits.
Below are some organic foods that you can eat daily if possible.
- Fruits and Vegetables, including Mushrooms.
- Grains.
- Legumes.
- Nuts and Seeds
- Organic Coffee / Natural Tea
- Dairy Products and Eggs.
- Livestock Feed.
- Meats and Poultry.
These may be more expensive than your regular lot of groceries, but this is worth the investment.
Use less Water
Decreasing water consumption is one of the most efficient ways of going green. With water crisis rising at an alarming rate across the globe, play your part in saving the resources available for us. You can use lesser water by taking shorter showers, or by installing low power shower heads in your bathroom. Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth or doing the dishes, or give low power dishwashers a shot to replace your traditional ones that consume excess water.
Plant more tress!
This may seem like an obvious step in the process of saving the environment, but not nearly enough people are doing this on a regular basis. Planting more trees means you’re actively contributing to making the environment greener and cleaner. The rapid rate of deforestation ensures that we’re cutting down trees quicker than we can grow them, but that needs to be reversed.
Reduce Carbon Footprint
To pull this off you’ll need to make sure you make your appliances smarter, which means upgrading to more energy-saving and economical appliances and a better lifestyle. New appliances enable Internet connectivity to the point where if you forget to switch your appliance off, maybe you’re A/C or your microwave, and you won’t need to go home to switch it off- you could just do it with the click of a button. This way you can conserve more energy and worry less about the appliances at home when you’re out!
You don’t have to make changes that are too heavy on your pocket. Start small, start early, and stay steady on your path to a greener and more sustainable Earth. Reuse, recycle, reduce, and refuse what you can, and conserve energy and water. Remember, these resources aren’t just for your convenience; you share this space with other humans, and there are still plenty of generations that are yet to come. Be smart about your share of resources, and play your role in making the Earth better.
