Summary: If you are someone who aspires to be an ayurvedic practitioner there are certain guidelines that must be taken care of.  Learn more with the following read.

An ayurvedic practitioner is someone who would diagnose any anomaly in the patient’s body and would provide an ayurvedic remedy as per the requirement and observations. This ayurvedic remedy would include a combination of herbal ayurvedic medicines, oil therapies followed by yoga practice. Since the remedy is a complete healing process, it also includes changes in the habitual eating method and even lifestyle.

If you aim to be an ayurvedic practitioner, here is how you can be one:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree

If you aspire to be an ayurvedic practitioner, you must complete your undergraduate program first. Medical schools do not ask for any specific field in the bachelor’s degree. Post the degree you may apply for admission in a medical school.

In a medical school, you may choose a medical specialty such as osteopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy or Chinese medicine. While examining the patient you may apply any of the ayurvedic techniques.

  • A professional programme will be helpful

Once you are through with the bachelor’s degree, you may apply for a professional program. Although this is more of an individual’s choice, a professional certificate in the same will have its aids. One can choose from Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), Doctor of Naturopathy (ND), acupuncture programs etc. You may choose the disciplines; these programs will be lecture-based and will also include thorough clinical practice. For a broader aspect of Ayurveda, you may also apply for Ayurveda courses in India.

  • Apply for a license

Different medical practitioners have different eligibility standards. The basic standard followed by most is the completion certificate of an approved program and minimum experience in clinical practice. If eligibility standards are approved, the medical practitioner must pass an exam or more as per the specialty.

  • Enroll for approved Ayurveda program

It is important that you must enroll for an approved ayurvedic program by the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA). This is because only a legitimate Ayurveda school can offer an approved program. The program will incorporate lectures on core Ayurveda topics and clinical experiences. Moreover, you are free to get in touch with the instructor personally.

  • Get a job or start your own practice

Once you are through with the basic requirements of being an ayurvedic practitioner; it’s time to look for a job or start your own practice. Do not be selective, rather plan in advance. In case you are unsure of how to move ahead, start by applying for jobs. You may contact yoga studios or naturopathic doctor for partnerships.

  • Start teaching Ayurveda

After a period of time when you will be experienced and will have a clientele, you may start teaching Ayurveda. You can start by giving classes on principles of Ayurveda for students and the general public, teaching at Ayurveda schools and colleges. You may also conduct workshops, seminars, and retreats. All these will not only bring monetary benefits but would also bring reputation to your name as an ayurvedic practitioner.

  • Participate in continuing education

Now that you are a licensed ayurvedic practitioner, it is required that you participate in continuing education coursework on a daily basis.

If you are a student you may also join NAMA as a practitioner. Those who are able to complete 500 hour NAMA approved Ayurveda program are qualified for practitioner membership.

All these are the basic standards that you must fulfill to become an ayurvedic practitioner. If you wish to learn the encyclopaedic Ayurveda you may join Ayurveda courses in India. They offer a variety of courses that one may choose from such as Ayurveda cooking courses in India, Ayurveda beauty therapy courses, meditation courses etc.
