A university for life skills

ConsciousEd–  is an online university we’re building, teaching the life skills we wish we’d learned in school. We wrote this article because our readers wanted more inspirational and actionable self-development content, and we thought it might be worth sharing on your page too 🙂

List of our articles:

Effective communication – At a personal development seminar I attended several years ago, I saw a small group of people have amazing flashes of insight into their own lives. The seminar convener was able to flip the way most people were perceiving things in their life. The most impactful conversations had to do with how people were perceiving others.
Anxiety – I’m on the balcony playing with pegs. Not quite two years old. Out of nowhere a bomb drops from the sky and explodes nearby. It’s a huge shock to my little heart. I scream. My sympathetic nervous system injects me with adrenaline and cortisol, propelling me like a rocket into my father’s arms. read more!
Good Habits – Picture a massive elephant with a rider on top trying to steer it where to go. The rider is our rational self; the elephant our emotional self.
Depression – A whole bunch of things come to a head rather suddenly. Within the span of twelve months, I leave a toxic workplace ending a career I love, leave a relationship with the most significant person in my life after a decade together, and leave my home country for good. To top it off, inside me lives an unending diatribe of self-hate, bubbling like a live volcano.
On being authentic – Violence was everywhere: at home; on the playground; in the streets. Even as a child I could see that it didn’t have to be this way. At the same time, I’ve been blessed with a unique gift of storytelling. For the longest time, I’ve known that my life’s purpose is to use this gift to help create a gentler, kinder world. Nobody told me “believe in yourself,” I just did.
Happiness – We live in a happy-obsessed society, constantly bombarded with happy smiling faces on TV or billboard ads telling us their version of happiness.
I hate myself – Standing in front of a mirror in my parents’ home, aged 30, single and shamefully broke, I slapped myself in the face as hard as I could.  How could you be so stupid? And again, slap! You’re so stupid! And again, and again, and again, and again, until I couldn’t take the pain anymore.
Openness – After having conversations like this, the relationship between my friends and I really deepened. We broke down barriers, made it ok to be vulnerable, and cared deeply for each other. We talked about our goals and life experiences and learned from each other. We kept each other accountable and pushed each other to achieve more.
Overcoming social anxiety – You get social anxiety when you’re around certain people. That anxiety cripples you and you start wondering why you’re so anxious. Now you’re becoming anxious about being anxious. Oh no! Doubly anxious! Now you’re anxious about your social anxiety, which is causing more anxiety. Quick, where’s the whiskey?
Purpose – When you come across a problem, think for yourself how to solve it, trust in your own judgement. See the world with your own fresh pair of eyes and make your own conclusions from the first-hand experience. Don’t just listen to everything that other people tell you. Always question and think critically; other people are no smarter than you are. Listen to others, but think for yourself.”
