The Meaning of Different Flowers Given as Birthday Presents

One of the most common ways of showing love and appreciation for a special person is by giving them flowers. Flowers have been part of cultural traditions all over the world, and flowers are great gift ideas for different occasions. Gifting a bouquet for birthday is also one way of playing it safe, especially if you are having trouble selecting the perfect gift.

Meaning of Different Flowers Given as Gifts. Although the giving of flowers is accepted worldwide, one should still be careful in the selection of the flowers to be gifted. Different flowers have different meanings. You may give a bouquet as a gift to a friend who may misconstrue the gift as meaning something else. Misunderstandings may arise because of the flowers that you include in your bouquet. Here are the different meanings attached to common flowers.

Alstroemeria. Alstroemeria is commonly known in laypeople’s terms as the garden lily and comes in a variety of colors. The garden lily is given as a gift to wish the celebrant good fortune, prosperity, and wealth.

Amaryllis is a symbol of poetry, beauty, and inspiration. A person who receives a bouquet of amaryllis may have inspired the sender and thus is given the bouquet as a gesture of gratitude.

Asters, Daisies, and Irises. These three common flowers are usually combined into a bouquet. A birthday celebrant that receives a bouquet containing these flowers must not interpret the gift further since the gift will only show that the giver is thoughtful enough to remember the birthday. No romantic undertones are included in giving such a bouquet.

  1. Carnations are flowers that show that the giver admires the receiver of the flowers. However, carnations are not considered as romantic enough to indicate intents aside from admiration.

  1. Gerberas are in the same family as daisies and are known to symbolize hope, serenity, and peace. A bouquet of gerberas must not be misinterpreted as something romantic since the intention of the sender will most likely be a thoughtful and friendly gesture.

  1. Lavender flowers represent silence, serenity, purity, and calmness. Giving a lavender bouquet for birthday celebrants are practical gift ideas since the fragrance of lavender inside a bedroom can help produce a more relaxing sleep. A lavender bouquet that is hung in a dry area can last for two years while still producing a relaxing fragrance. Lavender petals may also be infused with your bath water to create a soothing aromatherapy bath.

Lilly: The most common meaning associated with lilies is purity and devotion. However, lilies may mean differently depending on the culture. In China, lilies are commonly used in weddings since lilies symbolize one hundred years of love and are symbols for good luck.

Rose: It is a well-known fact that roses are the most romantic flower and have been associated with love and romance. Roses are the only type of flowers that have different meanings depending on their color. Orange roses stand for fascination, energy, and desire.

Red roses, on the other hand, are the classic symbol for “I Love You”. Giving out a bouquet of red roses to a birthday celebrant is often associated with the givers underlying intentions of love and romance.

When you are planning to give out flowers to a birthday celebrant, it is important to know the meaning and symbolism associated with each type of flower to avoid misinterpreting your gift as something other than what it is.
