Step 3: Make the Window Opening Watertight

You are left with a window opening. The first step is to make this window opening watertight. It is essential to prevent water leakage between the window gasket and wall. Aluminum tape is very effective in securing the opening. Most of the DIY-errs use water seal gaskets for ease of installation. Roll out the materials and start from the bottom sill. Fix it till the top and make sure there are no gaps.

Step 4: Level the Opening

New shingles are to be installed on the sides and top so make sure you extend out the gasket edges. Make perfect corners by cutting the excess and folding it properly. The next step is to level the opening to ensure the window fits perfectly.

Use a bubble level on the bottom sill to check the level. If it’s not right, raise the lower side with a small shim. Continue the process until all of the sides and top make a uniform opening. The preparation phase takes a long time but if you want seamless results, spend your energies in insulating and leveling the opening.

Step 5: Install the Window Casement

Now is the time to bring the new casement window to the opening and fix it carefully. You will need the assistance of one or two people to adjust it into the nailing flange. While you are installing the window, make sure the shim hasn’t moved. Nail the window in its place.
