If the last year has taught us anything, it’s that having a sport, hobby, or some other activity to stay active, get out of the house, and keep us sane is more important than ever. But, a lot of us are either unwilling or unable to spend a ton of money to try out a new hobby that we may not like.
Luckily, there are lots of sports that you can get into without breaking the bank. Here, we’ll list five, and give some tips to get into them without breaking the bank: it’s more than possible to have fun and get outside on a budget.
Competitive Shooting Sports
This one will sound odd: guns are expensive, right? Well, not always. Especially if you want to build or assemble your own, it’s more than possible to get into the sport of shooting fairly inexpensively. In fact if you build your own rifle, you can save a ton of money. It’s as easy as buying easily assembled parts like a complete lower and AR upper receiver.
The ultimate in frugality would have some startup costs, but a lot of folks love hand-loading their bullets, which is great for consistent accuracy and does save money over time. Nowadays, you can get everything you need from an online gun store. For instance, if you go to Primary Arms’ website, they have a lot of great information about getting into the sport, and getting what you need.
As we’ve tried to show here, there are lots of sports that you can get into for relatively little money. Doing what you want might require a little online bargain hunting, but I see that as an opportunity to take advantage of the excellent tools that the internet offers. With a little time invested in searching, it’s entirely possible to get into any of these sports without needing to make major budgetary changes in your life. Hopefully, at least one of them sounds like a good idea to you!
Fishing
While deep-sea fishing from a yacht is an amazing experience that I’d recommend to anyone, I have just about as much fun shore fishing. Currently, I’m in an apartment, which means little space.
So, I bought an old fishing rod off of a local marketplace website and used an old school backpack to contain everything I needed tackle-wise. If you shop smart, it’s very possible to get into fishing for less than $100. One expense you do need to keep in mind though is a license. Mostly, the funding from those goes into conservation, anyway, so it’s the right thing to do.
Longboarding
Longboards are a staple among freshmen on college campuses. That also means that, about October, a lot of them either are scared of falling and stop boarding, or just get sick of carrying it around.
This is where you can benefit. Often, it’s possible to find almost new, high-grade longboards for a lot less than half of what they were when they were new a few months ago. I’d recommend trying to pick one up from a local college kid at a great price. Longboarding is one of my favorite ways to spend a sunny afternoon.
Basketball
Basketball is a cheap sport to get into. Likely, all you need to come up with is a ball. Even that cost can be offset if, using some local social media groups, you can find a group to play with regularly in a park.
With, at most, the cost of some new shoes and a ball, you can start to develop your skills at a public court, and watching yourself get better at something is super satisfying. Eventually, starting to play with people for fun, or in competitive leagues, can be an awesome way to spend consistent time getting healthy.
Soccer
Similar to basketball, soccer is extremely cheap in terms of entry costs. Shoes aren’t even strictly necessary: I once knew a guy who insisted on practicing barefoot.
Assuming you’re not that guy, all you’d need is a pair of shoes and a soccer ball. Once you’ve had a chance to get some time in practicing, again, joining a local group to play for fun is a good way to get into a sport and stay consistent. That’s a major theme for me: the money you spend on a sport gets used much more effectively if you stick with the sport.
