Tips from teachers: The best ways to rewrite your sentence

It is a very valuable skill to learn how to rewrite sentences in a proper and professional way. In fact, this skill can help you immensely in your academic career (school, college, and even university) as well as for publishing content online!

But what’s the point of rewriting content or a sentence? Let’s say that a person named John has published a book named ‘Adventures of John’. Now every sentence in that book is the property of John, and no one can reproduce or write any part of that book on any medium. This is due to the copyright, and anyone attempting to copy the work of Mr John will have to face legal trouble!

On top of that, educational institutes also encourage their students to write original content and refrain from plagiarism. If students start to copy content they have found on the internet, then how they will learn anything? As you can see, it is important to write unique content from both legal and even ethical points of view.

So, you have found great content online or in a book and now want to rewrite it in your wordings? Have a look at these tips to rewrite sentences easily:

Reword known also as Rephrase or Rewrite

One of the easiest ways to write content is to reword it first! Look at the piece of content and mark the words which can be replaced with better synonyms. This is the first step toward rewriting sentences and making them unique.

When picking suitable synonyms, try to avoid difficult synonyms or words which do not match the overall context of the sentence. To find suitable synonyms, you can use Google Search, a dictionary, or other online tools.

Looking for an easier way to rewrite content without going through all the trouble? You can easily rewrite your sentences using various rewording tools such as rewritetool.net.

Keep it Short

The 2nd tip is to keep your sentences to the point (short) and simple. In order to achieve that, start by looking at the redundant words or also known as filler words and removing them from the content!

There are a lot of words that can be easily removed from the content without changing the meaning or the context of the sentences.

Example of Filler words: Perhaps, basically, just, basically, really

Split Sentences

According to the Plain English guide from Oxford, your sentences must be within the range of 15 – 20 words. The reason for this limitation is very simple – long sentences are very difficult to read and can even force the readers to skip sentences. I mean, if this entire article was written in one paragraph, I am sure you wouldn’t be reading it in the first place!

So, another tip for rewriting sentences is to split them up and make them short!

Change Tense

When rewriting content, try to avoid changing active voice in to passive voice. And if the source content has a lot of passive voice sentences, then you should change it into active voice!

Change Order

Changing the sentence order along with using synonyms, changing tenses, and splitting sentences can help you write unique and meaningful sentences!
