Essential Spring Cleaning Tips

The sun is beginning to shine a little bit longer, and the temperatures are just starting to warm up. Spring is a great time of year to get deep into the cabinet where you store your household cleaning supplies and get to work on spring cleaning projects.

Take stock of any supplies you need to replenish. Then, compose a spring cleaning checklist. Now it is time to get to it. Here is a good list of tasks to motivate you, starting with the exterior and moving inside. Be sure to check out 6 best heated socks to buy in 2021 – heated sock reviews- Adventuresfans.com.

Wash Windows and Screens

Remove the screens from the windows, being sure to note from which windows they were taken. Using a bucket of soapy water and a brush, gently scrub the screens. Rinse them off with hose water and set them in the sun to dry.

Clean the glass panes of your window sashes with commercial glass cleaner or white vinegar. Do this with a soft cloth or paper towels.

Hose off Terraces and Decks

Remove the furniture from your stone terraces and wood decks. Hose down the surfaces to remove any mildew or salt residue. Wipe down the furnishings.

Clean out Gutters

Cleaning leaves and debris out of house gutters is not an easy task to tackle. If you are not feeling steady on a ladder, hire someone who specializes in gutter cleaning. It is worth it so water can flow freely, to avoid leaks.

Dust

Using a feather duster or slightly damp cloth, dust your shelving, painted furniture, ceiling fans, lampshades, and books. Shake out the duster or cloth outside.

Vacuum Rugs and Upholstery

After you have dusted the house, thoroughly vacuum all carpets, rugs, upholstery, and floors. You can take chair and couch cushions outside and gently beat them to release dust particles. If you are experiencing a musty smell, sprinkle some baking soda mixed with a few drops of lavender or pine essential oil on the carpets and leave overnight—vacuum in the morning.

Here is a quick guide site to help you find the perfect vacuum for your home.

Shampoo Carpets

Spring is a great time of year to deep clean carpets with a rotary shampoo and extraction machine. You can rent one or hire a professional carpet cleaner that has commercial-grade equipment. Shampooing carpets will get rid of dirt, allergens, and dust mites.

Clean and Repair Tile Surfaces

Tile finishes on walls and floors can be wiped clean with a solution of water with a few drops of disinfecting peppermint and citrus oils. Once that is done, you can repair small areas of grout with an appropriate filler or caulk found at your hardware store.

Clean Wood Floors and Furnishings

Wipe wood furniture clean with a slightly dampened soft cloth—mop wood floors with a bit of soapy water. Rinse and be sure to dry the floor with a clean towel thoroughly. Then, refresh all wood surfaces with a wood furniture oil or a thin layer of butcher’s wax—Buff the finish with a soft cotton flannel cloth.

Wipe Clean Mirrors and Glass

Clean all of your reflective surfaces with an ammonia-free glass cleaner and a dry cloth. Or, you can make your own solution of 1 cup water, 1 cup rubbing alcohol, and one tablespoon white vinegar. Surfaces to clean include mirrors, glass tabletops, shower enclosures, and glass covering artwork. Acrylic surfaces can be cleaned with plain water and dried with a clean cloth.

Final Thoughts

The above is a basic checklist to jump-start your seasonal cleaning. If you have the energy and time, keep going by washing pillows and bed covers, dry-cleaning curtains, wiping down walls and ceilings, resealing marble and granite, and having your chimneys and flues cleaned. Give yourself a generous time frame for spring cleaning so that you don’t lose momentum and become overwhelmed.
