How To Prepare Your AC For The Upcoming Summer Season

You won’t want to find that your AC is not working on a hot sunny day when you try to switch it on. Air Conditioners can cease to function requiring maintenance. Their filters can become clogged and their cooling ducts need periodic cleaning. Thus, preparing them for the upcoming summer season is crucial to ensure they function when you need them.

You may need to call a professional AC maintenance and inspection team to test your AC before use. However, there are few things that you can do on your own to improve your AC’s performance this summer season.

Here you will learn how to perform the basic AC maintenance required for the upcoming summer season.

Clean Or Change The Filters

There are filters inside your AC indoor unit. Its purpose is to filter out the air as it spreads throughout a room. With time, filters can get clogged with dust and debris. If you don’t clean them properly, your AC won’t give you the amount of cool air that you need.

Changing AC filters is quite easy, and you can do it yourself. Turn off the power before opening your indoor AC unit. Open your indoor unit. Remove the filters carefully and direct them towards the light. If you don’t see the light shining through them, it means they are dirty. Wash them carefully and let them dry before putting them back in the indoor unit. It is advisable to clean your filters once a month to ensure that your air is clean and prevent dust from circulating in your room. You may also need to replace them after some time. Servicing filters speed up the time required to cool a space, thus saving the cost.

Installing A Thermostat

A thermostat regulates the temperature within a space. It controls the AC setting within your room and switches it off when you don’t need it. This saves much of your utility cost. Such thermostats are easy to install. However, you can always call a professional to install it. Installing a thermostat before summer can save you from the headache of controlling your AC according to your routine.

Clean The Coil Of The Outside Unit

Your AC outdoor unit contains coils that can capture dust and debris over time. Air Conditioner condensation coils maintain the efficient flow of AC operation. If they become clogged, it can affect the overall ACs function. Clogged coils can’t condense the air properly thus taking a lot longer to properly cool a room. It is best to call a professional to have your outdoor unit cleaned thoroughly.

Call Your AC Technician

If you find that there is a problem with your AC but you can’t figure it out, you can always call an AC professional to come and help you. Often there is too much  gunk  in the coils making it hard for you to clean yourself or you don’t know why your AC is making such weird noises.

Professionals have the special tools and cleaning agents to carefully remove such materials from the coils.

Check The Refrigerant Levels

A refrigerant is a liquid used inside of an AC that is used as a coolant. A lack of it can make it hard for your AC to cool the air quickly. Checking the refrigerant level is crucial to ensure that your AC is working fine.

If the refrigerant level is low in your unit, you can add more. Check your refrigerant type and fill up your AC with the same one or call a professional.

Check The Ducts

Ducts are the air passages that deliver or remove air. Leaky ducts can cause your AC to work harder. Gaps or leaks in the ducts can affect the airs passage. If there are any leaks, disconnected joints, or holes in your AC ducts, seal them. You can use sealant and aluminum foil tapes for that purpose.

Remove The Debris Around The Outside Unit

Your AC outdoor unit requires air circulation. Plants, branches, leaves, and trees can limit the ACs function as the outdoor unit doesn’t get enough air. Consider removing such debris around the outdoor unit to have a better functioning AC.

Final Words

Following the above tips can help you prepare your AC for the upcoming summer season. Don’t wait for summer to arrive to have your AC unit looked at. It is better to think ahead and get your AC unit ready.
