6 Crucial Things to Inspect When Buying a Used Forklift

If you’re considering buying a used forklift, it’s important to thoroughly inspect it to ensure you’re making a sound investment. A forklift is a significant piece of machinery, and any issues with its components can lead to costly repairs and safety concerns.

Here are some key steps to follow when inspecting any type of forklift before making a purchase.

Check the Lift Chains

The lift chains are essential for the forklift’s operation, as they lift and lower the forks and any loads on them. Begin your inspection by examining the lift chains for cracks and signs of welding repairs.

Cracks in the chains can lead to breakage, compromising the forklift’s functionality and safety. Also, ensure that the middle section of the mast doesn’t have corroded or missing pins and links.

Thoroughly Inspect the Forks

The forks play a crucial role in providing a stable platform for lifting loads. Inspect the forks closely for signs of wear, such as bends and cracks. Pay special attention to any cracks, as they indicate the need for fork replacement.

Also, compare the thickness of the fork blade’s heel to the upright fork shank’s thickness. Significant discrepancies suggest wear and the need for fork replacement.

Test the Battery’s Power

The battery is a vital component for forklifts, so it’s important to evaluate its condition and remaining power. Ask the previous owner about the battery’s usage, including the number of shifts it was used for and the duration of engine operation.

Standard batteries typically last around five years with one shift per day. Based on this information, you can estimate the battery’s remaining power. Inspect it for damage, acid leaks, and corrosion. Don’t forget to ensure that it meets the necessary weight and size requirements.

Note the Odometer Reading

The hours logged on the forklift’s odometer provide an estimate of its remaining lifespan. Compare the hours used with information about the typical longevity of the forklift model.

Ensure that the odometer hasn’t been tampered with, as a low reading despite significant wear could indicate manipulation. Alternatively, you could find a reliable seller online for forklifts as well, like Adaptalift Group – Used Forklifts for Sale in Brisbane to ensure you get what you need.

Evaluate the Engine’s Condition

Start the forklift and let it run for a few minutes to observe its performance. Switch off the forklift and open the engine compartment for a thorough inspection. Check the hoses for cracks or leaks and inspect the engine oil level using the dipstick.

Low oil levels might indicate engine leaks. Assess the belts for lubrication, tightness, and signs of wear. For electric forklifts, ensure the battery connections are secure, and for propane-powered forklifts, inspect the integrity of bolts and tank brackets.

Check the Tires’ Condition

Check the tires for signs of damage that may require replacement after purchase. Look for chunking, cracks, and punctures. Assessing the tread depth can tell you a lot about the tires’ condition as well.

Look at the wear lines or safety lines on the tires, and if absent, examine the sidewall lettering. If the tread has reached the top of the lettering, it’s time to replace the tires.
