Security Cameras – Dos And Don’ts

Surveillance systems are not only used as a safeguard against potential danger, but they can also be used for locations where you can’t always reach but need a line of sight. So, if you are one of those people who think that security cameras are not for you, you might just need to re-evaluate your surroundings. It matters not if you live in a high rise or an individual house, the ways in which you can use a couple or more security cameras are limited only by your imagination. A good security camera, whether IP or wireless can provide you with complete monitoring no matter how far away you are from your house.

Irrespective of if you already have a security camera installed or are planning to get a couple more, there are a few things that you keep in mind. If you’re planning for installation anywhere outdoors, it is always advisable to get a good weatherproof security camera. Here’s a comprehensive list of the do’s and don’ts that you could follow –

Matching UTP connected devices such as couplers and modular plugs are must, to the category of the cable used. This should be followed throughout the installation.

Depending on the design and specifications, cables in an IP installation can run only till 295 feet for the best results. This is a lot of work to do on your own, hence why it’s better to let a professional from AV Fitters handle the installation of your CCTV Camera.

Measuring the cable length to be extended helps, before cutting the sheath and push the extra cabling into the wall socket.

The T568A or T568B connection format can be used and stick to the chosen one for the entire installation.

Cameras built for indoor monitoring don’t fare well outdoors and those with weak infrared sensors won’t help in dark areas, so choose the camera as per the environment.

Going with the previous point, it’s always a good idea to know the minimum and maximum light that the camera is going to face in typical conditions, else the footage recorded might not be worth much.

Apart from the lighting conditions, placement and positioning of the camera should be done in a way that there are no obstructions in its field of view.

It is a no-brainer, but good internet connectivity is a must for wireless cameras so make sure you have signal boosters or repeaters installed.

For outdoor cameras, using surge protection is a good idea, specifically in areas known for lightning.

Surge protection might safeguard against voltages outside the system, but make sure that the PoE power supply being used is suitable for the installation.

If you feel that your neighborhood is prone to crime, getting a vandal-proof housing will make sure the camera does not tamper.

Cat-6 UTP is considered the industry standard best, but Cat-5e is a more economical option especially if you are content with standard video resolutions. Fiber, as opposed to metal cabling, can handle video feeds better and for longer distances but isn’t as durable. So, make your choices accordingly when considering camera placement and cabling.
