Recognizing Signs Your Plumbing System Needs Repairs

Everyone, and we mean EVERYONE, needs a well-functioning plumbing system in their home. But, as with other systems in your home, such as HVAC, plumbing can break down through the years. Various issues will crop up, requiring expert attention you can’t provide on your own. However, recognizing the signs of plumbing problems in the early stages can allow you to zero in on them quickly and avoid more expensive repairs.

Leaking Pipes

Yes, it’s one of the most obvious signs you need to hire a plumber, but a very important one you don’t want to overlook. Even the small, seemingly inconsequential leaks can cause damage to your house’s structure over time, not to mention increased water bills! So, how do you know when the pipes are leaking?

  1. Visible water stains on walls, ceilings, or floors
  2. Mold or mildew growth
  3. Unexplained increase in water bills
  4. The sound of dripping water, even when no faucets are in use

When you spot these signs, contact a professional plumber to figure out what the problem is and fix the issue at the source.

Low Water Pressure

Maybe you’re taking a shower and notice the pressure isn’t as consistent as before, or maybe you get a low stream when using the water hose. Low water pressure could be caused by several factors, such as:

  • Mineral buildup in pipes
  • Leaking pipes
  • Partially closed valves
  • Problems with the water main or municipal supply

It’s a smart move to contact a licensed and insured plumber to diagnose what went wrong and have them suggest the right solution, be it cleaning the pipes, fixing a leak, or adjusting the water valves.

Slow or Clogged Drains

Homeowners are constantly reporting issues of slow-moving or clogged drains. You may notice the sink, shower or tub is draining at a snail’s pace or not at all. Why? It could be any of the following.

It could be you only need a plunger or snake to do the job, but in many cases, severe blockages need an expert’s special touch.

While minor clogs can sometimes be resolved using a plunger or drain snake, more severe blockages may require professional intervention.

Gurgling or Bubbling Sounds

Follow your ears. They will let you know of any gurgling or bubbling sounds coming from the drains, toilets, or sinks. This could be the plumbing system’s venting that allows air to enter the pipes and maintain pressure balance. Hear some not-so-pleasant sounds? it could be caused by:

  1. Blockages in the vent stack
  2. Improperly installed or sized vents
  3. Frozen vent pipes during cold weather

Allow a pro to inspect your plumbing system’s venting, make the repairs needed and adjust the parts that will ensure it works the way it should.

Discolored or Smelly Water

The nose knows, too. So, if you detect odors coming from the water or note that it has an unusual color, this could be a sign of a plumbing problem. Some common causes of water quality problems include:

  1. Rust or corrosion in pipes
  2. Mineral buildup
  3. Bacterial growth
  4. Contamination from nearby sources

In some cases, water quality issues may be related to the municipal supply rather than your home’s plumbing system. However, it’s essential to have a professional assess the situation to determine the cause and recommend the appropriate solution.

Paying attention to the signs of plumbing problems can help you address issues promptly and prevent more extensive damage to your home. If you notice any of the above indicators, it’s essential to contact a professional plumber for an inspection and repairs.
