Top Reasons to Use Audio Visual Aids for Conveying the Message Effectively

Audio visual aids use both hearing and sight for teaching or learning. The use of two senses makes the communication more effective. Audio and video equipment are used extensively for training and educational reasons. The use of films, recordings, photographs, etc., to substantiate teaching materials appeals to both the students’ memory and understanding of a topic.

Powerpoint presentations in support of a verbal lecture, still images or video clips to illustrate a point, graphic charts to support a research or investigation are some of the ways in which audio visual aids can come into play.

So Here Are Some Top Reasons to Use Audio Visual Aids:

  • Different People Process Information Differently

People learn, process and retain information differently and there is no one right way. While some are audio learners – that is they learn by hearing information – there are others who rely on visual memory – that is by seeing things, to process information. There are also others who learn through actions. By presenting information using audio visual aids, you are engaging at least two types of senses, and leveraging two learning styles or modes.

Memory and processing are improved when information is presented in both audio and visual formats. Note-taking can further assist information retention.

  • Retention of Interest

The interest of the audience can be maintained if the orator varies the mode of communication.

It is difficult to concentrate for long on what someone is saying. Some people might find it hard to process information when spoken in a language that they are not familiar with. If the orator refers to a chart, video clip, or some slides to illustrate a point, the audience’s attention can be retained.

Again, use of more than one sense is advantageous for humans to retain information.

  • Inexpensive Audio Visual Equipments

Sophisticated audio-visual aids require electricity and complex machinery, such as projectors or television sets. But there are many simple aids that do not cost much and you can make locally. They do not require a power source or heavy equipment, they do not cost much to produce and they can be made to suit your precise needs. Some audio visual companies create aids that are inexpensive and easy to set up.

There are also a few challenges associated with using audio visual equipment, if you do not practice the presentation with the equipment enough. That will not only distract the audience, but also take you away from the point you’re trying to make. These are some pointers you must follow for a successful presentation and ensure the effectiveness of the message you are trying to convey.

  1. Select the aids in accordance with your need. Do not simply use an equipment because it’s attractive, if you do not know the manual inside out. You should be well informed about the size of the audience.

  2. Implement the aids to reinforce your message. Your aids are meant to complement and supplement your spoken word. The preparation should be well enough to handle a technical glitch.

  3. Make sure the text on screen is legible and the words audible. Your first priority should be the clarity of the message you’re trying to give. What’s on the screen should be legible and the audio equipment should be checked before presentation.

  4. Practice till perfection. Practice using the audio visual aids beforehand. Make sure that you know how to operate the controls.
